Goodwill letters: when asking nicely actually works

For a single late payment on an otherwise clean account, a request beats a dispute.

A goodwill letter isn't a dispute. You're not claiming the late payment is wrong — you're asking the creditor to remove an accurate mark as a courtesy. It works best in a narrow situation: one or two isolated lates, an account otherwise in good standing, and a real reason (illness, job loss, a payment that got lost in a move).

Creditors are not obligated to agree, and many say no by policy. But the ask is free, it doesn't reset any clock, and a deleted late payment on an aged account can move a score more than a deleted collection. Keep the letter short, specific, and free of legal threats.
