Authorized user accounts: real lift or wasted effort?
Piggybacking on someone else's card can help — under conditions most people ignore.
When someone adds you as an authorized user, that card's history can appear on your report: its age, its limit, its payment record. On a thin file, a decade-old card with a high limit and no lates can meaningfully change both your average age of accounts and your utilization.
The conditions matter. The issuer has to report authorized users to the bureaus (not all do), the account has to be in genuinely good standing, and the balance has to stay low — because that utilization lands on your file too. A maxed-out card added as a favor will cost you points, not earn them.
