Experian Dispute: How to Fix Errors on Your Experian Report
Experian holds the file most mortgage and auto lenders pull first. A wrong balance or a stale collection there can price a loan for you. Here is how an Experian dispute works.
How a Experian dispute works
Identify the exact error
Wrong balance, an account that is not yours, a duplicate, a re-aged date, or an inquiry you never authorized. Write down the account number and what specifically is wrong.
Send a written dispute
A mailed letter under FCRA §611 creates a paper trail an online form does not. Attach your ID and proof of address, and keep a copy of everything you send.
Wait out the 30 days
The bureau has 30 days (45 if you send new documents mid-investigation) to reinvestigate and must delete anything it cannot verify with the furnisher.
Escalate what survives
If an item comes back verified but is still wrong, request the method of verification, dispute directly with the furnisher, or add a consumer statement.

What is specific to Experian
Experian shows a payment history grid you can check month by month
Compare the grid against your own statements. A single mismarked 30-day late in an otherwise clean history is a common, very fixable error — and it is one of the costliest for a score.
Personal information errors travel
Old addresses and name variants on Experian are how other people's accounts get merged into your file. Cleaning the personal-information section first prevents the same mixed data from coming back.
Experian is the bureau behind many soft-pull prequalification tools
Unauthorized hard inquiries show up here often. If you did not apply for credit with that company, an inquiry dispute is appropriate — inquiries you did authorize are not disputable.
Frequently asked questions
How long does an Experian dispute take?
Up to 30 days from receipt, or 45 days if you submit extra documentation mid-investigation. Experian must send you the results in writing.
Can I dispute an Experian hard inquiry?
Yes, if you never authorized it. Inquiries from applications you actually made are accurate and will stay for two years.
Does disputing with Experian hurt my score?
No. Filing a dispute does not lower your score, and a dispute flag on an account is temporary.
