Zombie debt: old accounts that come back to life

Debt buyers purchase expired paper for pennies and hope you'll restart the clock.

Time-barred debt gets sold in bulk, cheaply, precisely because it's hard to collect. The buyer's business model is volume and hope: contact enough people, and some will make a small payment that revives the statute of limitations, or acknowledge the debt in writing and hand over a fresh lawsuit target.

If a collector contacts you about something you don't recognize or that seems ancient, don't confirm anything, don't offer a payment, and don't negotiate on the phone. Request validation in writing first and check the original delinquency date against your report before you say a word about the balance.
