Student loans on your report: what to watch

Servicer transfers, deferment coding, and duplicate tradelines cause most of the errors.

Federal student loans often appear as multiple tradelines — one per disbursement — which makes a single loan look like several accounts. That's normal. What isn't normal is the same loan reporting twice after a servicer transfer, with the old servicer's tradeline still showing an active balance.

Deferment and forbearance periods should be coded as such, not as delinquencies. Given how many times federal loan servicing has changed hands, checking the status codes and balances on each tradeline is worth the ten minutes.
