The special rules that protect medical collections

Paid medical collections must come off. Small unpaid ones shouldn't appear at all. Many still do.

The three bureaus changed how medical debt reports: paid medical collections are removed entirely, unpaid medical collections don't appear until they're a year old, and medical collections under $500 are no longer reported. Those are bureau policies layered on top of the FCRA, and they're only as good as the bureaus' enforcement.

In practice, plenty of small or paid medical items are still sitting on files that nobody has checked. Pull all three reports and look specifically at the collection section. An item that violates the bureaus' own reporting rules is one of the fastest deletions available to you.
