The §605B block: the strongest tool most people never use

With an identity theft report, a bureau must block the item within four business days.

Ordinary disputes give the bureau 30 days and a reinvestigation. FCRA §605B is different: when you provide an identity theft report, proof of identity, and identification of the fraudulent information, the bureau must block that information from your file within four business days of receipt.

The gate is the identity theft report — typically an FTC Identity Theft Report from IdentityTheft.gov, sometimes paired with a police report. Filing that report is the work; once you have it, the block is a much faster and more reliable path than disputing fraudulent accounts one at a time.
