How to get your reports without paying for them

Federal law guarantees free reports. Knowing the right channel avoids the upsells.

AnnualCreditReport.com is the government-mandated source for free reports from all three bureaus, and the bureaus have kept weekly access available. That's the report — the itemized data — not a score, which is what most paid products are actually selling.

You're also entitled to a free report after an adverse action (a denial based on your credit), if you're unemployed and job hunting, on public assistance, or if you're a victim of identity theft. Pull all three: an item can appear on one bureau and not the others.
