How to spot a credit repair scam

Advance fees, new identity numbers, and 'guaranteed deletions' are all federal red flags.

The Credit Repair Organizations Act makes several things illegal outright: charging fees before services are performed, telling you to dispute accurate information, and advising you to create a new credit identity with an EIN or CPN. Any company doing those things is not cutting corners — it's breaking the law and exposing you to fraud charges.

Legitimate help is transparent about what it does: it can't remove accurate information, can't promise a specific score increase, and must give you a written contract and a three-day right to cancel. If a pitch guarantees deletions, that's the tell.
