Rebuilding Credit After Disputes: The Boring Stuff That Works
Removing negatives clears the drag. Rebuilding is what actually raises the number — and it is unglamorous.
Disputes are subtraction, not addition
Deleting an inaccurate item removes a penalty. It does not create positive history. If your file is thin after cleanup, the score will still be modest.
The four levers
- On-time payments, every month. Autopay the minimum so a busy month never becomes a 30-day late.
- Low reported utilization. Pay before the statement closes.
- Age. Keep the oldest accounts open.
- A small, sane mix. One revolving card plus one installment account is enough — do not open loans for score points.
Tools worth using
Secured cards, credit-builder loans, and being added as an authorized user on a well-managed old account all add real positive history. Rent and utility reporting programs can help thin files.
What does not work
Paying for aged tradelines, opening several cards at once, or closing cards to "clean up." All three usually cost you.
Next step
Set autopay, move your due dates away from tight weeks, and let time do the rest.
Stop reading about disputes. Start sending them.
