Authorized User Tradelines: Real Benefit vs Myth

Being added to a family member's card can genuinely help. Buying a stranger's tradeline is a different story.

What actually transfers

When you are added as an authorized user, the account''s history — age, limit, payment record — often reports on your file too. On a thin file that can be meaningful.

The conditions

  • The primary account should be old, low-utilization, and never late
  • The issuer must report authorized users to the bureaus (not all do)
  • Damage transfers too: if the primary goes late or maxes out, so does your file

Where it goes wrong

Paid "tradeline rental" from strangers is a different product. Scoring models and manual underwriters increasingly discount authorized-user accounts with no relationship behind them, and lenders can treat it as misrepresentation.

Removing yourself

You can be removed at any time by calling the issuer, and the tradeline generally drops off your report. That makes it low risk to try with someone you trust.

Next step

If you have a family member with a long, clean card history, ask. It costs them nothing and can add years of age to your file.
